In competitive fast-paced multiplayer games — Counter-Strike 2, Rust, Squad, Minecraft — having a fast internet connection isn't enough. The real enemy is Bufferbloat: a silent network traffic jam. It is entirely possible for a server with a massive 10Gbps fiber connection to still produce 200ms lag spikes purely because its traffic isn't being organized properly.

What is Bufferbloat and Why Does It Spike Game Ping?

Think of your server's network connection as a single-lane highway. Standard hosting companies treat all data equally. It's a "first in, first out" system.

The problem occurs when large traffic spikes hit. When a player downloads a massive mod update, or the server saves a huge world file, they act like massive, slow-moving semi-trucks entering the highway. Your tiny, lightning-fast game packets (like a player swinging a sword or jumping) get stuck behind these trucks.
